100 year old parenting tip
In my day job I am a Plumber, I know you are asking, "What, you aren't a millionaire blogger after only five posts? Shocking!" (just kidding)
So yes, I am a Plumber but I am finding some ways to blend that job with my parenting blog.
Today I did a job for Mrs. Van(for short) who turned 100 years old in January of this year. She still lives in her own home, but no longer drives, and her mind is as sharp as a tack. As I am doing my job she mentions how old she was in conversation, and I thought after 100 years on this planet and for a larger portion of that being a parent, grandparent and now great-grandparent she has to have some wisdom into parenting.
So after I was done with the job, I told her I was a parent myself and would really appreciate any parenting tips she could share. She paused for a minute, not often does your plumber ask for parenting advice I guess, but then she said some really profound yet simple things.
Be a loving family (love each other and display that love)
Participate in your children's life/activities (she was a classroom mom and was at all the events she and her husband could get to for their daughter).
and I think her best piece of advice was this;
When you have only one make sure you don't spoil them, but when you have more then one make sure each one feels special!
Mrs. Van is a
Mom of one
Grandmother of one
Great-grandmother of three
We spoke for about twenty minutes and I am grateful for her time and words.
As the bible says, in Job 32:7 (TNIV)
"Age should speak, advanced years should teach wisdom"
and we should listen, thank you Mrs. Van!

sounds like great advice and I like the bible verse you paired with it very fitting. Good job Bud keep it up!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment. Glad you liked the bible verse too. Do you have any advice you got from a grandparent you would like to share?
DeleteExcellent advice!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your comment. Do you have a parenting that you got from a grandparent? Would love to hear it and thanks again.
DeleteIts always worth it to listen and recieve great wisdom from past generations, it seems as though those people new how to take full advantage of the simple pleasures of life and put a high priority on what was truly valuable....God , family , etc... Love it! Keep it real :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Joel. I agree it makes think we need to seek grandparent counsel more often. Like the bible says in Leviticus 19:32 "Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly." Do you have a parenting you could share that you got from a grandparent?
ReplyDeleteIf the chance is not given to a Grandparent to enjoy their grandchildren how can they give any parenting advise and teach them from someone that give life in the very beginning for them to be part of their generation. Is actually like placing the grandparents fiscally and mentally in a nursing home at early age. With no respect, compassion a grandparent can't have the enjoyment of the grand kids, and be able to give parenting advise.
