Jon Acuff parenting tip

Last week I was in Tennessee at the Quitter conference- put on by Jon Acuff. It was a seminar to help people go from their day job to their dream job (me going from plumbing to parent coaching and writing) it was a great event.

Jon is very busy with his writing and speaking schedules yet he still has to make time for family as a husband and father to two young daughters. During a break at the conference I asked him if he could tell me his best parenting tip. What he shared was, " Give your kids a head start on things you want them to be awesome at later" -Jon Acuff-  He went on to explain if you want your kids to be compassionate then teach them compassion early on.

I would say he put this parenting tip to use when he used his blog "Stuff Christians Like" to raise money to build two kindergartens in Vietnam all because of a conversation he had with his daughter after she saw a picture of a little boy starving.

That was back in 2009. At the conference last week he retold the conversation he had with his daughter after she saw that picture. You could see Jon getting visibly choked up (with his daughter in the audience) as he talked about that moment when a child realizes that there is true suffering in the world and how that hits us as parents.

We here at Working Class Parenting believe that Faith and Compassion are one of the five principles of parenting. I would suggest you read his Blog and see how he took that parenting opportunity and gave his daughter a head start toward the gift of compassion.

What tip do you have to help teach a child compassion?
